Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) has provided salt producing areas with six salt iodizing machines, which were bought from South Africa.
The Machinery called Davey are supplied to Godusbo of Somali Region, Afdera of Afar region, (which produces over 80pc of the salt requirement in Ethiopia) and Shewit in Tigray. The machines have a capacity of producing 100ql of salt an hour.
“The reason is that Afdera and Godusboo are major producers of salt in the county and we wanted to demonstrate best practices in these areas,” said Alem Abay, Country Manager, GAIN Ethiopia.
The country, which now supplies 300,000ql of salt a month to households, compels the suppliers to iodize their salt according to the proclamation number 204/2003. 80pc of the salt that is supplied to the market now is iodized.
