LINDENHURST, Ill. (AP) A 5-kilometer run is being held to honor a researcher originally from suburban Chicago killed while visiting Ethiopia last month.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (http://bit.ly/2fPs07k ) the Nov. 26 event remembering former Lindenhurst resident Sharon Gray will raise money for a scholarship fund in her name aimed at mentoring young women in science.
The 31-year-old was a researcher at the University of California, Davis, and a leader in the study of how climate change affects plants. She was in Ethiopia to launch a research project when anti-government protesters attacked the vehicle she was in. Officials said she was struck by a rock.
Gray earned her doctorate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She graduated from Antioch Community High School in 2003.

The run will be at Lindenhurst’s Millennium Park.
