President Erdogan Receives an Honorary Doctorate From Addis Ababa University

President Erdogan received an honorary Doctorate from Addis Ababa University yesterday (January 22). The award was bestowed on the President for his contribution and support for people struggling to achieve democracy and freedom and for his firm stance on African issues.

Dr. Admasu Tsegaye , President of Addis Ababa University said President Erdogan had played significant role in fighting terrorism, in hosting Syrian refugees and the reconstruction of Somalia. He added that President Erdogan had also helped Turkish investors to invest Ethiopia thereby creating jobs and the transfer of technology. President Erdogan, expressing his pleasure at the award, said, he would work towards strengthening the age-old links between the two countries dating back to 16th century.

He said his government would continue to offer scholarships to Ethiopian students to strengthen the people-to-people ties. Currently, 181 Ethiopian students are studying in Turkey. President Erdogan also emphasized that Turkey and Ethiopia would continue to cooperate in fighting terrorism in different ways. In a congratulatory message on the occasion, Ethiopia’s President Dr. Mulatu Teshome highlighted the importance of President Erdogan’s visit in connecting the educational institutions of the two countries.

The Chairman of the Board of Addis Ababa University, Kasa Teklebirhan, said “Addis Ababa University takes pride in awarding the honorary degree for a leader who is contributing a lot towards a better world.”
