KENYA will send men’s and women’s teams to the Zone Five-handball qualifiers for the All Africa Games.
The qualifiers in Ethiopia will be between February 11-16 in Ethiopia.
The championships will include Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan and Ethiopian teams.
Kenya Handball Federation fixtures secretary Charles Omondi said plans are underway to select the teams.
He noted, thanks to the East and Central Africa Club Championship that ended two weeks ago, the federation will have an easy task assembling the provisional squad.
Nairobi Water women’s team won the trophy in the womens category while Police of Congo retained the trophy in the week-long event at the Nyayo National stadium.
“We are keen on coming up with a good squad ahead of the championship. Thanks to the continuing KHF national league and the just ended East and Central Africa Club Championship. The players are in participation mood and the technical bench will be spoilt for choice,” said Omondi.
He added, “Our record at the event has not been promising, save for our juniors who won the same event mid last year in Uganda.
The ladies finished sixth as the men came a distant 11th in the 2011 championships in Maputo, Mozambique and we want to improve on our performances,” says Omondi.
Omondi, who doubles up as International playing rule Commissioner, tipped, the country to do well in the absence of Egypt who have already qualified for the All Africa Games.
“Egypt have always been a thorn in our flesh but since they will not participate, we have a chance to do well. However, our neighbours Uganda are equally good judging by their recent performances.” Omondi noted.
