Cairo — Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri is in Addis Ababa on Thursday, at the invitation of his Ethiopian counterpart Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the ministry said.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Badr Abdelatty said both ministers are scheduled to hold talks over bilateral relations. Talks would be in continuation of negotiations which have started last month during the African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa.

The 24th African Union Summit started on January 23 and continued until January 31.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi arrived in Ethiopia on January 29 to head Egypt’s delegation in the African Summit. He nevertheless cut his trip short the next day after a militant attack in North Sinai killed at least 30.

Egypt’s relationship with Ethiopia has been tense since the latter started constructing the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in May, 2013.

Egypt believes the dam would negatively affect its share of the Nile water. The hydroelectric dam is being built on the Blue Nile, which provides Egypt with 85 percent of its Nile water share.
