A man illegally entered a woman’s Penn Street, Kingston, home Monday afternoon and sexually assaulted her, police said.
Investigators say Tewodros Melese Alemu, 25, grabbed the woman’s buttocks and breasts, pulled her body against his and made explicit sexual requests after following her into her home around 3:45 p.m.
The woman told investigators she eventually stopped the attack and scared Alemu off by saying her mother was arriving home.
Alemu was arrested a short time later at his residence in the Edwardsville Apartments on Beverly Drive in Edwardsville when a police officer spotted his vehicle.
Alemu is charged with indecent assault, burglary, criminal trespass and harassment.
During questioning, Alemu said he went to the woman’s home after hearing a rumor the residence was a place where men go for sexual acts, police said.
Alemu told police he emigrated from Ethiopia in 2003, and his legal paperwork is in Washington, D.C. His immigration status was still being verified on Tuesday, police said.
According to arrest papers:
The woman told police a man with a “strange accent” showed up at her house asking for someone named Marcus. He told her he wanted to come in her house and she declined. He followed as she tried to retreat inside. Alemu immediately made a lewd sexual proposition. He then approached her and began to fondle her despite her repeated orders to stop. Alemu then pulled her body next to his.
The woman said she offered to take his phone number in an attempt to get him to stop and have a way for police to track him down. She then scared him off by claiming her mother was arriving home.
As he was fleeing, he told her to call him and he “would be free the same time tomorrow.”
The woman’s landlord told police he saw Alemu show up at the woman’s home and start talking to her while he was trimming hedges. He figured she knew him. About 10 minutes later, he heard the home’s door slam and saw a man fleeing in a Cadillac Deville.
Police located the car outside 7 Beverly Drive, Apt. 3, in the Edwarsdville Apartments, where Alemu lives. Alemu was taken into custody. While being arrested, Alemu asked the officers, “How old was she?”
During questioning, police called the phone number Alemu provided to the woman and Alemu’s cell phone, which was in his pocket, began ringing.
Alemu explained he went to the home Monday afternoon because someone told him it’s a place where men can receive sex acts. He again asked “What was the age of the girl?” before blurting out, “This is God’s punishment for doing this on my wife.”
Alemu was jailed Tuesday in the Luzerne County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash bail.
