SILVER SPRING, Md. – Police in Montgomery County are investigating after a man attempted to force himself inside the apartment of an 11-year-old girl as she returned home from school Friday.
Police arrested Surafel Melese, 31, of no known address, after a brief foot pursuit Friday. He faces several charges, including kidnapping, false imprisonment, assault, burglary, stalking and trespassing, after attempting to follow a young girl into her apartment located in the 700 block of Sligo Avenue around 3:20 p.m. Friday.
According to police, the young girl noticed the suspect as she walked through the lobby of her apartment building because she had also seen him earlier that morning. As the girl continued to her apartment, the suspect followed her and tried to force his way into her apartment as she tried to close the door. The girl began to scream and her 16-year-old cousin who was home at the time approached the girl and suspect, who then fled from the apartment.
The victim called police while her cousin pursued the suspect. Police say there was a brief confrontation between the suspect and the girl’s cousin somewhere outside of the apartment prior to police arrival. Once police arrived, there was a brief pursuit and the suspect was taken into custody.
Malese is being held on $250,000 bond and is due in court on Monday.
