AMSTERDAM, October 17 (Xinhua) — Getu Feleke won the 35th edition of the Amsterdam marathon on Sunday in perfect sunny conditions.
The 23-year-old Ethiopian recorded a new course record of 2:05:44. The previous record set by Kenya’s Gilbert Yegon last year was 2:06:18.
Wilson Chebet from Kenya made his marathon debut grabbing the second position in 2:06:12 and favourite Chala Dechase from Ethiopia had to settle for the third place in 2:07:24. Ethiopian athletes Cherkos Feleke (2:07:29) and Hailu Mekonnen (2:07:38) finished fourth and fifth respectively.
After 35 kilometres the leading group was reduced to seven athletes and Getu Feleke took the lead. The Ethiopian opened a gap which he maintained to the end. He arrived ahead of the others in the Olympic stadium of Amsterdam to take his first major marathon win.
“I am very happy” , was the only thing the breathless winner could say after his race.
The women’s marathon was also dominated by the Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes. Alice Timbilil from Kenya won in a personal best time of 2:25:03, while Ethiopians Eyerusalem Kuma (2:27:05) and Robe Guta (2:27:44) finished second and third.
