Addis Ababa July 08/2016(WIC) :On the 4th of July 2016, ENA conducted an exclusive interview with His Excellency Hope Tumukunde Gasatura, Rwandan Ambassador to Ethiopia about Ethiopia’s election as a non-permanent member to the UNSC. Here is the full interview.
ENA. I would like to express my gratitude to His Excellency for allowing us to conduct this interview amidst your busy hours.
Ambassador Hope Tumukunde Gasatura: I would like to thank ENA for coming to discuss with me here at our Embassy on my opinion on Ethiopia’s election as a non permanent member of the UNSC. Rwanda is so happy to see that Ethiopia is elected as a non permanent member of the UNSC. Ethiopia and Rwanda are strong allies.
ENA: What has enabled Ethiopia to qualify for a seat in the UNSC as a non permanent member?
Ambassador Hope Tumukunde Gasatura: Ethiopia had everything to offer to qualify for a seat in the UNSC as a non permanent member. Ethiopia is widely and deeply involved in regional peace keeping and in the battle against terrorism. Ethiopia is at the forefront in promoting UN values. The country has proved to be a strong actor in Africa and the AU was right in endorsing Ethiopia’s membership to the UNSC as a non permanent member.
ENA: What can AU expect from Ethiopia as a non-permanent member of the UNSC?
Ambassador Hope Tumukunde Gasatura: Ethiopia will be there not only for the country but also to act on behalf of the AU. Ethiopia would fight for the benefit of Africa as a whole. We also expect that Ethiopia will further promote the existing partnership between the UNSC and the AU. Ethiopia can help so that the partnership would not be one sided. Both sides need each other. The UNSC needs AU while AU as well needs UNSC. Both need to work in mutual partnership.
