Egyptian MP calls for calm ” Nile is A National security and Life”

by zemen

An Egyptian Member of Parliament, Mr Mohamed Youssef, has asked the Nile Basin countries to restrain from moves that will deprive some countries that need the Nile water most the opportunity to use it.

According to Mr Youssef, Egypt’s survival entirely depends on River Nile because it is largely a desert country and should not be blamed for adequately using the water. “The issue of the Nile water concerns all of us because it is about national security and life,” Mr Youssef said, adding, “The Creator (Allah) did not provide the Nile water for the Nile Basin countries to fight over or sell to one another.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Sunday Monitor recently, Mr Youssef said it is wrong for Egypt to be labelled ‘the crocodile that hinders other countries from optimally using River Nile’.

“The ‘crocodile’ (Egypt) needs help. Without the River Nile life will not be the same and the ordinary people will not allow that to happen,” said Mr Youssef. He requested Uganda to play a mediation role and not take sides with other countries against Egypt.

Recently Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda among others countries that share the river Nile signed an agreement which will allow them use River Nile for high level development of infrastructures such as hydro power dams and irrigation among others.

All this will be done through the Nile Basin Commission whose headquarters will be in Uganda. However, Egypt and Sudan are not party to the agreement. The two colonial-era-agreements of 1929 and 1959 give the two countries preferential rights to use up to 94 per cent of the River Nile water, leaving only six per cent for the other countries.
