Egypt military preparing for War with Ethiopia?

by yeEthiopiaforums

A Washington DC based website WorldNetDaily.com reported exclusively that Egypt government ordered it’s military to prepare for any dispute that might spark because of the new Ethiopian Millennium dam on the Nile River. WND also reported according to their source Egyptian believes Israel is encouraging Ethiopia to build the dam.

Below you can find the whole report of WND.com titled

Will this be next Middle East war?

Military prepares as major dispute threatens to rock region

JERUSALEM – The new Egyptian government has instructed its military to prepare for any eventuality regarding a crucial water dispute with neighboring Ethiopia, according to Egyptian security sources speaking to WND.

The dispute centers around the Nile River, which is used by both Ethiopia and Egypt for water resources.

Ethiopia is planning to construct a nearly $5 billion dam, called the Great Millennium Dam, along the Nile River about 25 miles from the Sudan border. The dam will section off a larger portion of the Nile than is used now by Ethiopia.

Egypt is adamantly opposed to the dam or any deal that would reduce its share of the Nile and give more access to other countries.

A 1929 colonial-era treaty gives Egypt majority rights to the Nile’s waters. But six African countries have signed a petition, the Entebbe Agreement, calling for all Nile Basin countries to modify the old pact and re-allocate the shares of water from the Nile River.

Egyptian security sources say Cairo is appealing to the U.S. and European Union to oppose the proposed Ethiopian dam.

The sources said the Egyptian military believes Israel is encouraging Ethiopia to build the dam as a way to weaken the caretaker Egyptian government following the toppling of Hosni Mubarak’s regime. Mubarak was a stanch U.S. ally.

The sources further said the Egyptian military has been told to prepare for any eventuality regarding the situation.

While the Egyptian security sources said they hoped the confrontation did not escalate to a military level, one source told WND “the regime may be inching closer to a water war.”

The dispute marks the latest militant stance by the new Egyptian regime amid fears in the country of the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood seeks to create an Islamic caliphate. Both Hamas and al-Qaida are Brotherhood offshoots.

On Monday, former International Atomic Energy Agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei, who had previously announced his intentions to run for the presidency of Egypt, said “if Israel attacked Gaza we would declare war against the Zionist regime.”

The same day, Egypt’s foreign minister said Cairo is ready to re-establish diplomatic ties with Tehran after a break of more than 30 years, signaling a clear shift in Iran policy since the fall of Mubarak.

“The Egyptian and Iranian people deserve to have mutual relations reflecting their history and civilization,” said Foreign Minister Nabil Elaraby after meeting with Iranian official Mugtabi Amani.

Days after Mubarak stepped aside, Egypt allowed the passage of two Iranian warships through the strategic Suez Canal for the first time since 1979.

Also WND reported last month, the Egyptian military command met with Hamas to discuss ways to build a better relationship with the Islamist organization.

This news is not true. Egypt is willing to open a dialogue with Ethiopia. Egypt objected only to take unilateral actions against Ethiopia, the Nile water.

No matter what is the situation of Egypt they never going to just agree on the new Nile basin water agreement that signed by most of the countries. Meles surprised Egyptian by the sudden move of building the dam only by Ethiopia because they were on talks to have a joint ownership on the new Nile dam. and this was clearly reported on news sites (http://www.voanews.com/english/news/africa/Ethiopia-Offers-Olive-Branch-in-Nile-Water-Sharing-Dispute-119003069.html) They will try to do anything that can stop or dely the construction on this dam. I won’t be surprised if this include a military clash.

@Ahmed, Egypt never tried to have an open dialogue on Nile. thye always threatening us by all means. Mubarak was a good politicain he had a support of US and peace with Israelis. he was a popet for them but still he managed to block us from building any dam over the Nile. I think this is not a time to dialogue on how to allow us build the dam it should be a time to dialogue on how to failrly share the water.

Although it would be great if Egypt avoided this battle but there is comparison between the Egyptian army and the Ehtiopian one…Ethiopia has the T-62s and T-55 as the mainstay of their armored forces while Egypt produces its own M1A1 (which all have been upgraded to M1A2) tanks. I assume they still use Mig21s while Egypt uses F-16C and Ds…..no comparison over here..Egypt would send a couple of its fighters to Sudanese airports and the next day it would bomb the hell out of the dam!

We Ethiopians are not the once advocating war, you and your backward leaders are the once trying to attack us for building a damn over OUR river. If you have a brain use it and we can talk about equitable sharing agreement for all otherwise your destabilization strategy has failed and your war efforts will also fail. Start a war and we will drive your barbaric ass back to your desert, you and your coward military could NEVER EVER defeat Ethiopia!

It’s funny how Egyptians claim that there is no conflict and we are “negotiating” “opening dialogue” DELAY TACTICS. We opened the Nile Basin Initiative in 1999 For more than 10 years Egyptians didn’t come to the negotiation table with good faith, only delay delay delay.

Now we signed a Cooperative Framework Agreement which will be international law, Egypt lost its veto rights.

The Swiss adventurer Werner Munzinger (1832 -1875) remarked: “Ethiopia with a disciplined administration and army, and a friend of the European powers, is a danger for Egypt. Egypt must either take over Ethiopia and Islamize it, or retain it in anarchy and misery.”

What matter is the feeling of the people not the weapons. The feeling is the weapon. we can invent all the right weapons at the right time. whatever it is we will be one in case of Egypt but lets leave ” Gotegnenat and zeregnenat” principle. Ethiopians will be the winner what soever the case. I think Egyptian people is modern people they don’t believe by force but they believe on systematic resolution of Conflict.

I am sure Egyptians know very well no one can make a profit out of war. More over There is no reason for Egypt declare war on Ethiopia. Coz no border dispute between the two countries, no disputing river between them again, Egyptians know the Nile (Abay) in Ethiopia belongs to Ethiopians, at the same time Ethiopians know the Nile in Egypt belongs to Egyptians. Ethiopia is just building a dam on its own river not on Egyptians, so no open ground for war. pleas Ethiopians just ignore to the comments of some Egyptians claiming on the dam they r just kidding. turn ur attention to the dam and try to play ur own role to make it happen on the right time.

we will never let Egyptians die due to the shortage of water. it is not because they are Egyptians but because they are human beings like us. but they should know that we will also not let ourselves die due to starvation. That is why we are building the Dam.

I do not think Egypt will go to war with Ethiopia for we did build a dam which benefits the Sudan nd Egyptm But if at all Egyptcommits a historic error I don’t think they it will be diferent from what they have sustained in the 1874 – 1876 this defeat was just carried out only by the northern Ethiopian residents for your reference read this.
The Ethiopian- Egyptian War: 1874 –1876
Egypt emerged as a powerful force in Africa during the latter stages of the decline of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire. In the second half of the 19th century, an ambitious and energetic new Khedive negotiated with the Ottomans to take control of Egypt. He intended to create an Egyptian African empire by swallowing up Sudan and Ethiopia.
For this purpose he recruited a large army staffed with European officers and Confederate officers from the American Civil War which had ended 10 years earlier. These officers were sent to Ethiopia, and the following accounts of the Battles of Gundet and Gura are drawn in large part from their diaries and other notes. The accounts are extracted from an article published in the Journal African Affairs in 193x by A.E. Robinson This account is useful as it presents a different perspective on the Ethiopia-Egypt conflict. Other accounts of these battles from Ethiopian and other sources can be found in the biography of Ras Alula and in general histories of Ethiopia.
Note: The battle sites of Gundet and Gura are both located within present-day Eritrea. Eritrea did not exist at the time. It is currently the fashion in Eritrea to hack out a separate Eritrean identity from the broader current of Ethiopian history. Therefore this period of history is ignored or deliberately twisted by Eritrean historians, and most of the younger Eritreans have no idea about it.

Gundet: 1875
Note: Colonel Kirkham was a British officer who was contracted to help train the Ethiopian soldiers. Munzinger was a Swiss adventurer who was in the service of Egypt.
In December 1874, a force of 1,200 [Egyptian] troops from Kassala, under the command of Munzinger, occupied Keren, but as protests were lodged, he withdrew. A skeleton garrison was however, left for the protection of the Roman Catholic mission (so it was said), although for nearly forty years, they had managed without such measures.
Owing to the presence of Turco-Egyptian troops within what he regarded as the Ethiopian frontier, Colonel Kirkham entrenched a force of Ethiopians at Ginda.
During the month of October, Colonel Arendup with an Egyptian force occupied Ginda without resistance. Arendup then hoisted the Turkish ensign. Colonel Arendup sent the Naib Muhammad of Arkiko to King John of Ethiopia with a message (which in reality constituted an ultimatum), whereby the immediate delimitation of the frontier was demanded. King John imprisoned the messenger, who occupied the unenviable position of being tributary to both the Turks and Ethiopians in respect to all custom duties he collected on imports and exports.
Meantime, reports reached the Ethiopians that the Gallabat garrison had been reinforced by the Egyptians, and had crossed the frontier into Ethiopian territory en-route to Gondar. This force was probably that of Munzinger Pasha, which marched from Kassala to Danakil country. It consisted of about 2,000 men, and would pass through Agordat and via the Mereb, near to Adowa. This force was ambushed, and Munzinger and nearly all his followers were killed on November 7th by Danakil tribesmen. There were practically no survivors reported.
On November 14th , Colonel Arendup’s force was attacked at Gundet, to which place it had advanced on the road to Adowa. His column consisted of 2,500 infantry, armed with Remington rifles, and 12 mountain guns. There were a number of European and American officers under his command.
Possibly due to overconfidence at the occupation of Ginda without any resistance, Colonel Arendup was unprepared for an attack, and the fact that the Ethiopians commenced firing with rifles was a complete surprise. His force was practically annihilated, despite the personal bravery of its commander. Among those killed were Colonel Arendup, Arakel Bey Nubar (nephew of the Egyptian Prime Minister), Count Zichy, and Rustem Bey. An American officer collected the survivors, and with Rauf Bey and Major Dornholtz, managed to reach Massowah.

For comparison, Haggai Erlich provides the following, more detailed description of the Battle of Gundet, based largely on a Ge’ez biography of Ras Alula written over 100 years ago.
“On 14 November, Alula crossed the Mereb river and immediately engaged forward Egyptian posts. The main Ethiopian army under the emperor (Yohannis IV) crossed the river on the night of 15-16 November. Meanwhile, Shalaqa Alula had disengaged his forces; he had completed a flanking action from the west against troops advancing from Addi Quala; and had appeared in the Egyptian rear, blocking their line of retreat. “
“On the morning of 16 November 1875, the Egyptians found themselves surrounded in a steep valley, and the battle soon turned into a massacre from which only a few of the 3,000 Egyptians managed to escape. Two thousand two hundred Remington rifles and sixteen cannons were captured by the Ethiopians, who lost some 550 dead and 400 wounded. Among the latter of whom was Alula’s brother Basha Tessema, whose wound remained unhealed for a long period.”

Gura: 1876
Note: After the defeat at Gundet, the Egyptians sent another, much larger force to attack Ethiopia in 1876. The Egyptians advanced to Gura and built a fort there.
On November 6th and 7th, the Egyptians were attacked by the Ethiopian army, (which was estimated at 60,000 men) and surrounded. Most of the Ethiopians were armed with firearms, and although they had only one field-gun, it is said to have had no effect in deciding the action.
The accounts of the American officers are silent on the point; but it is said that Rateb Pasha allowed his views to be overruled by Loring Pasha, who insisted on the ramps of the trenches which had been erected being razed, so that the artillery could have a clear zone of fire.
The gunners and infantry were enfiladed by the Ethiopians from higher ground, and the slaughter was so great that several regiments became completely demoralized. Those officers who attempted to rally their men and the survivors, were accused generally of joining in the panic, and of cowardice in the field.
The Egyptian troops and officers were called upon to fight under conditions hitherto unknown to them, and without the benefit of tried and skilled leaders. The result was inevitable. The regiment of Ismail Pasha Kamel stampeded during the action and could not be rallied.
The Ethiopians followed up their success, and closely invested Fort Gura, which they attacked in force on the 8th and 9th of March.
On March 10th, Rashid Pasha and Osman Bey Neghib led an attack on the Ethiopians which was repulsed with loss, and both officers were killed while leading their men. From one of the accounts, this attack would appear to have been a sortie from the fort of 5,000 picked troops and artillery (Loring, p. 413).
The Ethiopians then withdrew to loot the dead and collect the rifles, etc. which the panic-stricken Egyptian troops had abandoned. Most of the artillery was lost, as well as considerable quantities of rifle ammunition.
After the withdrawal of the Ethiopians, the Egyptian troops got entirely out of hand, and burnt the dead and wounded enemies. The Ethiopians retaliated by a cold-blooded massacre of about 600 prisoners whom they had taken. Among these prisoners killed were Dr. Muhammad Ali Pasha and Neghib Bey Muhammad. Dr. Badr (who had been educated in Edinburgh) escaped by the assistance of an Ethiopian girl who discovered him, wounded.
On March 12th, an amnesty was arranged, and Monsieur Sarzac (the French consul at Massowah) went over the battlefield… the survivors of the Egyptian army were collected, and reached Massowah in May.
[Note: The battle of Gura ended Egypt’s ambitions against Ethiopia. Two of the captured Egyptian cannon can still be seen at Aksum]

I DON’T THINK EGYPTIANS WOULD PREFER TO ADD ANOTHER TROUBLE AT THIS WORST TIME. FIRST OF ALL THERE IS NO INTENTION TO BLOCK THE NATURAL WATER FLOW OF THE NILE. I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY EGYPTIANS SHOULD ALWAYS OPPOSE ONE’S DEVELOPMENT ENDEAVOR AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE DAM IS INEVITABLE AT ANY COST. WE UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM IS NOT WATER BUT EGYPT’S’ JEALOUS LOOK TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUB-SAHARAN NATIONS. THEY SHOULD STOP THINKING ABOUT THE DEAD FISH AND TRY THE DIPLOMATIC WAY.

Ok guys, first of all, you guys need to learn how to spell there is so much ignorance here it’s ridiculous, second of all lets be realistic here, no one wants a warbut if it comes to it, egypt doesn’t even have to fight it would take 1 egyptian bomber carrying a missile worth about 200,000 USD to destroy the Ethiopian damn which cost billions to build, if it is destroyed the Ethiopian economy would be on the brink of collapse. Third, the Egyptian army is better trained and equipped than any other army in Africa and is ranked one of the top 20 militaries worldwide. I understand Egypt lost battles in Ethiopia but that was 100 years ago no chance it happens again today so please stop thinking you can take them in a fight. The reason Egyptians are scared of the new dam is because of the extreme leverage it would provide Israel over the new Egyptian government, which is the only reason they support you building it. So seriously stop making threats, Egypt could send Ethipoia back to the stoneage without any effect to its economy or military, they are too advanced and you are too poor backward, poor and corrupt to compete.

People r u crazy?! There is no comparison between egyptian military forces ane the so called ethiopian army! or may be u think ur population which may exceed the egyptian 85 million population soon will give u some kind of advantage! Every military expert knows that ethiopian army is no match for the egyptian army .
Egyptian army ranked the 10th army in the world in terms of lethal power and size ,egypt air forces has the 4th largest f16 fleet in the world, egypt has an active army counted by hundreds of thouthands regardless of the reserve highly trained troops! ,did u ever heard about the elite forces of the thundershock who made a nightmare to the israelian troops, egypt has for far the strongest army in africa ,arab world and one of the strongest in middle east comparing with countries like iran, turkey and israel, egypt war might reached what it is now bec of the existance of a powerfull state like the nuclear israel at egypt,s border which is considered as strong as europian countries which is a problem that egypt has minimized by obtaining this kind of military force and trained troops, on the other hand what is the threats to ethiopia? Countries like somalia, eritrea which have some hundred militia persons which made ethiopia kneel several times! So what a hell r the chances of ethiopia against egyptian -experienced in war – army . Ethiopian army which involved in a so called wars with a so called countries had never been in a war!,on the other hand ethiopian know nothing about the people of egypt who r classified at the top in terms of the fighting belief so being more than 30 years in peace dosnt mean that egypt is weak in fact its the opposite, its bec that strong countries dont like to use its military might except as a last resort bec when they use it, it would be lethal.Egypt if had been pushed to use the military option could erase ethiopia off the map in days but realy egypt dosnt consider ethiopia as an enemy- egypt has only one well kown enemy -nethier the egyptian people consider the ethiopian people as a hositle nation i mean at last egypt and ethiopia has in fact a similar racial origins as both has a semeto african origins and also it is known that muslims form a significant portion of the ethiopian population according to the last statistics muslims constitute about 65% of the ethiopian population so they are brothers to egyptians but egypt may find itself in a position that there is no other option but war as the water is an issue of national security and an issue of survival not an issue of luxury!

Learn from Italy we had no weapon when we cut their Neck do you think it will be different from that today????????????? Trust me it was not that long ago don’t forget you were slaved by Europe!!!

Anyways I believe Egypt to get their fair share while Ethiopia feeding her citizens. After all we all are created there for reason. But if you believe colonial era, go ask Britain to give you water, don’t be fool they got nothing to give you and they don’t have any right to tell us what to do
