East African Standby Force (EASF) called on member states, international partners and foundations to support its efforts in ensuring regional peace and stability.
During a press conference aimed at resource mobilization here Tuesday, Rwanda Foreign Minister and Current Chairperson of EASF, Louise Mushikiwabo, said it is necessary to support EASF’s efforts to deploy and sustain its forces in the East African region.
She stated that EASF is mandated by the African Union to involve in the ongoing operations in the East African region and to respond to conflicts that impede the region’s socio-economic development.
The chairperson said EASF’s readiness to deploy its forces is constrained by logistics requirements. Leaders of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government had therefore endorsed an initiative “Peace Fund” in their Malabo’s summit last year to mobilize resources to EASF.
She indicted today’s conference is aimed at to lay out a strategy to constitute a Peace Fund which will provide the required logistics capability to sustain operations and to identify and approach potential donor groups.
Mushikiwabo added that an initial funding of 3.1 billon USD is needed for deployment and sustainment of EASF’s forces for the period 2015-2019.
The East African Standby Force is a sub-regional mechanism of the African Standby Force and has 5,200 trained personnel.
