A British tourist has been killed in a church in Ethiopia after a man accidentally fired a gun.
The victim, a 47-year-old man, had been visiting the northwestern city of Bahir Dar.
Government spokesman Shimeles Kema said the suspect had not known the “old rifle” was loaded.
“It appears that a resident of Bahir Dar, who was licensed to carry a gun, accidentally discharged his gun while changing the gun position from one shoulder to the other,” he said.
“He is a civilian. He has been arrested and the investigation is ongoing. The accident happened in a church.”
The victim has been taken from the tourist destination to the capital Addis Ababa for a post-mortem examination.
The incident occurred on the morning of Christmas Eve.
A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Ethiopia.
“We are providing consular assistance to the families.”
