AU decides on presidential committee for Libya crisis

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) The Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU) Commission decided on Friday to establish an AU ad-hoc high level committee on Libya to find a peaceful resolution of the current crisis in the North African country.

The decision was reached after the PSC had convened a meeting on the situation in that country, which remains a concern for the international community.
According to the council, the ad-hoc will comprise five African leaders as well as the chairperson of the commission, Jean Ping.African Union

However, the PSC stopped short of mentioning the five presidents who will soon start their task of finding a peaceful resolution of Libya’s crisis. It decided that the AU ad?hoc High-Level Committee on Libya be supported by a team comprising the Ministers of External Relations of the countries concerned, as well as the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security.

The committee is expected to engage with all parties in Libya and continuously assess the evolution of the situation on the ground, and to facilitate an inclusive dialogue among Libyans on appropriate reforms, and engage AU’s partners, in particular the League of Arab States, the Organization of the Islamic Conference, the European Union and the United Nations, to facilitate coordination of efforts and seek their support for the early resolution of the crisis.

The PSC has established a similar panel to deal with the political quagmire in Ivory coast.

In Libya’s case the AU has called for the protection of foreigners and African migrants some of whom are reported to have been under difficult conditions in Libya.

The PSC further called for the immediate cessation of all hostilities and the cooperation of the competent Libyan authorities to facilitate the timely delivery of humanitarian assistance to the needy populations as well as the adoption and implementation of political reforms necessary for the elimination of the causes of the current crisis.
