The Adama City side succeeded in collecting the full 6 points with two wins in a row in the season’s Ethiopian Premier League soccer club competition. On Sunday they had a 1-0 win over the visiting side Electric at the Adama arena. In the opening day of the season’s competition last week they beat the defending champions St. George two to nothing. Electric had a 1-0 win over Mekelakeya last week.
Adama City coach the veteran Asenafi Bekele performed well in this early campaign. If he maintains this feat his side can appear strong contenders.
On Sunday at the Addis Ababa Stadium Mekelakeya beat Coffee by a slender 1-0 margin. Coffee had a 1-0 win last week over Banks. Both Mekelakeya and Coffee have equal three points from two games.
In Addis derby Dedebit and Banks finished goalless. Last week Dedebit had a 2-1 win over Wolayita Dicha in the opening game while Banks conceded a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Coffee last week.
In other games held last week Hawassa and Sidama Coffee finished level at 1-1 while Dashen Brewery beat Dire Dawa City 1-0. In other venue Arba-Minch City beat Hadiya Hosaana by the same 1-0 margin.
Dire Dawa City and Hadiya Hosaana joined the elite league this season and both conceded defeat in their opening games. This was not a good start for both of them. Past experience tells us that for clubs who join the elite league for the first time it is advisable to collect points from the start simply because the games get stronger as the competitions reach critical stages.
This season the league is sponsored by the country’s brewery producer BGI Ethiopia. The country’s football governing body, the Ethiopian football Federation, faced strong challenge from Dashen Brewery and Habesha Brewery for making BGI Ethiopia title sponsor for the season’s competition.
