Hawassa’s nearly abandoned airfield is getting a facelift with Haile Resort, the recently inaugurated low-rise resort-style hotel, and the town’s administration collaborating to overhaul it to handle aircraft accommodating up to 20 passengers, world marathon record holder and owner of the resort, Haile GebreSilassies, told The Reporter.
The landing field, which will be upgraded to handle smoothly the landing and takeoff of small planes, will cater for tourists and visitors who opt to fly rather than travel by cars to one of the tourist attraction sites in Ethiopia from Addis Ababa.
The upgrading of the airstrip will also expand the services rendered by Haile Resort renders to include air travel.
It took the Olympic star two-and-half-years to build the Hawassa resort. One of the famous tourist attraction sites in Ethiopia, Hawassa is located 270km from Addis Ababa. The hotel sports 120 rooms and suites, pools, gyms, a mini-golf course and a 600m running trail.
The multi-million birr airstrip upgrading project is expected to be completed next year.
