First Presidential Trip to Ethiopia Planned – New York Times

President Obama will travel next month to Ethiopia to meet with African Union leaders and discuss ways to lift economic growth, strengthen democratic institutions and improve security, the White House announced on Friday. The visit, the first to Ethiopia by an American president, will follow a stop in Kenya, the home country of his father’s family. Human rights groups questioned the trip, saying that Ethiopia has silenced dissent with arbitrary arrests, mistreatment of detainees and repressive legislation.
