Ethiopia names new Army Chief

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has appointed Seare Mekonnen as the new Army Chief of Staff replacing Samora Yenus.

The appointment of Seare Mekonnen marks the first change at the top in 17 years in Ethiopia’s army, which plays a dominant role in the country that has Africa’s biggest population after Nigeria.

Samora served as army Chief of Staff for the past 17 years after Tsadkan Gebretensae (Let. Gen.) left his position. Seare Mekonnen, Samora and Tsadkan all hail from Tigray Province.

Abiy also restored the full honor and benefits of two army officials namely Alemshet Degiffe (Maj. Gen.) and Assamnew Tsige (Brig. Gen.) who were recently released from prison were convicted of conspiring to overthrow the constitutional order though violence.
