Ethiopia: Berhanu Nega elected leader of new opposition party

The founding forum for the establishment of  the newly formed Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice has concluded its session by selecting party leaders today.

Berhanu Nega and Andualem Arage were elected leader and deputy leader of the party respectively, while Yeshiwas Assefa and Chane Kebede became chairperson and deputy chairperson.

The party leader and his deputy will engage in government related works and run for candidature up to the prime minister position during elections, it was learned.

On the other hand, the chairperson and his deputy will handle only party affairs.

Party Leader Birhanu Nega said on the occasion that stabilizing and leading the country to democratization and ensuring democracy are among the priorities of Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice party.

According to him, building democracy in the nation is the responsibility of all and should not be left alone for anyone. “We are always ready to contribute our part towards maintaining that,” he added.

He called upon other parties to join their path saying that “there is no other better way than this for the nation.”

Representative of the ruling party EPRDF,  Fikadu Tessema said the government has taken measures like revising the anti-terrorism law, the electoral law, and press freedom in order to build democracy.

He added that merger of the seven parties is exemplary and other parties need to follow suit.

Swedish Social Democratic Party representative, Anders Osterberg said “this combination is a brave huge step towards democracy in Ethiopia.”

The future of Ethiopia is progressive and with equal rights of all citizens, he noted.

Social justice is crucial,Osterberg said, adding that everyone is important in his or her purpose. He urged the party to further strengthen working together as it will bring result ultimately.

Patriotic Genbot 7, Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP), All Ethiopian Democratic Party (AEDP), Semayawi Party, New Generation Party (NGP), Gambella Regional Movement (GRM), and Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) party dissolved themselves to create Ethiopian Citizens for Social Justice party.
