Ethiopia: 6200 Eritreans Cross Into Ethiopia in Just Over a Month

The UNHCR office in Addis Ababa announced on Monday (November 17) that more than 6,200 Eritreans had crossed into Ethiopia over the previous 37 days. UNHCR spokesperson, Kisut Gebregziabher, said that “more than 5,000 Eritrean asylum seekers crossed into Ethiopian territory in October alone,” adding that “in the first week of November, more than 1,200 Eritreans have arrived in Ethiopia.

” Some 78 of them were children, he said. A UNHCR report issued last July revealed that there were a total of 629,000 refugees and asylum seekers in Ethiopia, 99,000 of them Eritreans. Ethiopia now hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa. Ato Kisut the latest surge of Eritreans crossing into Ethiopia was “due to oppression and forced military service.” The refugees from Eritrea are housed in four refugee camps in Tigray Regional State.
