Image 1. Blame your office chair: Your office chair can contribute substantially to your back problems. When you sit, you tend to bend over, pressurizing your back. This posture can overstretch the spinal ligaments and strain the discs and surrounding structures in the spine. Over time, it can damage spinal structures and worsen your back pain.

2. Improper footwear: Shoes play an important role is your back’s health. Improper footwear can mess up your alignment as it alters your center of gravity, thereby placing extra strain on your lower back.

3. Uneven mattress: A very soft mattress causes your lower back to sink, throwing the spine out of alignment. It stresses your muscles, ligaments and spinal joints.

4. Shoulder bag: The bigger the bag, the more stuff you tend to put in it. Adding extra weight on one side of your body is one of the biggest causes of back pain. Whenever you carry added weight on one side of your body, it causes the spine to curve and leads to back problems.

5. Sleeping on your stomach: When you sleep on your stomach, it places excess strain on your back and spine. Stress on the spine increases stress on the rest of your frame. Also, when you turn your head to the side, it puts your head and spine out of alignment, twisting your neck.
6. Droopy shoulders: Prolonged slouching can strain the muscles between the shoulder blades, causing upper back pain. The natural forward curve of the neck is also exaggerated, which can also result in neck pain.

7. Smartphone’s and laptops: As people around the world get addicted to their electronic gadgets, back pain is becoming a prevalent problem. Pinning the phone between your shoulder and ear while you multitask is an instinctive move and it wreaks havoc on your neck.

8. Extra pounds: Along with other health issues, obese and overweight people have an increased risk of back pain, joint pain and muscle strain. They are more likely to experience problems in their lower back as the extra weight around their midsection pulls the pelvis forward, strains the lower back and causes lower back pain.

9. Crossed legs: When you sit cross-legged, it makes it difficult for your spine to be straight and your shoulders squared. As a result, you risk overstretching the muscles around the pelvis, increasing your risk of varicose veins due to blood flow interruptions.

10. Smoking: The nicotine in cigarettes restricts blood flow to the discs that cushion your vertebrae, increasing the chances of degenerative change. Smoking also reduces calcium absorption and prevents bone growth, leaving smokers with double the risk of an osteoporotic fracture than non-smokers.
