Gebrselassie ready for world marathon record attempt

By AW Staff, January 21st 2010

Haile Gebrselassie will be attempting to lower his world marathon record of 2:03:59 at tomorrow’s Dubai Marathon

HAILE GEBRSELASSIE was quietly confident about his world record chances in his press conference prior to the Dubai Marathon, which will take place at 6.30am on January 22.

The reigning two-time Dubai champion, who already holds the world marathon record at 2:03:59 from Berlin in 2008, announced his preparations for his world record bid were ‘perfect’ and if the conditions cooperate, the 36-year-old believes he can lower his world record mark.

Gebrselassie told reporters: “Everything has to be perfect, the weather and the pacemakers. If everything is perfect, I can run 2:03:30.”

The legendary Ethiopian, who will receive 250,000 USD for the victory, will also have the added impetus of a one million dollar bonus for a world record.

In order to accomplish this, the former two-time Olympic 10,000m champion plans to pass the halfway point in 61:30 and Gebrselassie will be aided by a strong cohort of pacemakers, including former world half-marathon champion Fabiano Joseph from Tanzania.

The women’s race also looks to be set to be Ethiopian dominated as defending champion Bezunesh Bekele takes on 2007 champion Magarsa Tafa.
