A JEALOUS boyfriend who murdered his Ethiopian girlfriend gets life in Prison

26 November 2009

Jamal Bakhit
A JEALOUS boyfriend who murdered his lover and chopped her body into pieces after she started internet dating was has been jailed for life.

Jamal Bakhit, 25, stabbed Rahmona Ahmedin to death at her fourth floor flat in Peabody Square, Islington, when she tried to end their four-year relationship.

The former criminology student then chopped her up with a circular saw and packed her dismembered body into two suitcases before dumping them beside the A1301 in Hinxton, Cambridgeshire.

Friends of Miss Ahmedin, who was brought up in Sweden after she fled Ethiopia with her family, said Bakhit had threatened to kill himself after she tried to end their relationship.

She had also fallen pregnant but had a termination against his wishes.

Bakhit played the part of the concerned boyfriend when he reported her missing at Islington police station.

He claimed he last saw Miss Ahmedin alive when she travelled to Bristol on June 6 last year to visit a friend.

The Tesco worker even sent text messages on her mobile phone and used her bank card to make it look like she was still alive.

But a jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court took just an hour-and-a-half hour to convict him of murder on Tuesday following a three-week trial.

Bakhit, of Bevan House, Clem Attlee Estate, Fulham, was told he must serve a minimum of 20 years before he is considered for release.

Judge David Radford said: "The stark and distressing truth is that when she was in her own home you brutally stabbed and killed a young woman. You have since had the gall to say to this jury that you loved and wished to marry her. You have showed not the slightest contrition or remorse."

The victim's burning body was found by horrified truckers in the early hours of June 18 last year. Signs of insect life in the charred, dissected corpse indicated Bakhit had stowed Miss Ahmedin for several days before she was torched.

A post-mortem revealed slightly built 5ft tall Miss Ahmedin had suffered a defensive stab wound to her right hand as she desperately fended off Bakhit's blade.

Bakhit had been captured on CCTV just a few miles from the Hinxton lay-by about an hour before the discovery of Miss Ahmedin's body.

A police search later uncovered a knife wrapped in plastic on a kitchen work top and Miss Ahmedin's belongings such as her purse, handbag and make-up bag. Detectives never discovered the cutting tool used to slice Miss Ahmedin's body into three pieces.

In a statement, Miss Ahmedin's family said: "By taking Rahmona from us, Jamal Bakhit has deprived a loving mother, father, sisters and brothers of the happy life we shared together. We want him to understand the pain he has caused our family and for him to realise that we will carry this grief with us for the rest of our lives".

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Rickells, who led the murder hunt, said: "This was a horrific act of violence committed against a young woman. Jamal Bakhit has never disclosed to police why he stabbed Rahmona, dismembered her body and later disposed of her remains close to the M11 motorway. I would like to thank Rahmona's family for the dignity they have shown throughout the trial.
