An Ethiopian air stewardess who attempted to smuggle cannabis worth almost £30,000 into the UK has been jailed for three years.
21-year-old Helina Teferi was stopped by UK Border Agency officers after arriving into Heathrow on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa on 12 October 2009.
A search of her baggage revealed around 10.5kg of the drug concealed beneath a false bottom in a suitcase.
Teferi pleaded guilty to the charges against her, and was sentenced to three years in prison by a judge at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday 7 January.
Peter Avery, assistant director at the UK Border Agency's criminal and financial investigations directorate, said:
'Crew members are subject to the same checks as anyone else entering the UK.
'In this case, Teferi would've been aware of the rules regarding controlled drugs, but yet she still attempted to exploit her position. This was reflected in the severity of her sentence.
'This latest success highlights our commitment to prevent drugs from reaching the UK's streets.'
Anyone with information about drug smuggling can call the customs hotline on 0800 595000.
