Dr Tedros Meets With China’s Foreign Minister

Foreign Minister Dr Tedros Adhanom met with China’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Wang Yi met, in Khartoum, capital of Sudan (January 12) before the commencement of the “Special Consultation in Support of the IGAD-led South Sudan Peace Process.”

Both Ministers exchanged views on the strengthening of relations at bilateral, regional and international levels to advance the cause of peace and harmony and mutual interests. Both Ministers also recalled China’s Prime Minister’s last year visit to Ethiopia and Africa in setting the course for the enrichment of the content of Ethio-China and Afro-China engagement. Dr Tedros put forward that Ethiopia was fully satisfied in its practical cooperative partnership with China on the basis of win-win and meaningful outcomes. The Foreign Minister also reiterated China’s tangible support to Ethiopia’s march towards its Renaissance.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi on his part emphasized that his country was contented in its bilateral relations with Ethiopia embodying all-rounded cooperative partnership for the common development of the two peoples. Wang Yi also underlined that the bilateral ties existed between the two countries would be consolidated in the years ahead with China’s continued support to Ethiopia’s development. Both sides also agreed on the importance of the “Special Consultation in Support of the IGAD-led South Sudan Peace Process” in moving the IGAD-led South Sudan peace process forward for the resolution of the crisis through a negotiated political settlement.

Dr. Tedros extended his gratitude for China’s initiative and constructive role aimed at the immediate conclusion of the war in South Sudan. Dr. Tedros also recognized that this consultation would be a locomotive to fast-track the IGAD-led mediation efforts. Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin, Chairperson of the IGAD Mediation Team on South Sudan peace talks, Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of South Sudan and SPLM/SPLA-in Opposition Chief Negotiator Taban Deng Gai joined the bilateral talks of the two Foreign Ministers.

All parties exchanged views on the issue of the “Special Consultation in Support of the IGAD-led South Sudan Peace Process.” They also expressed their thanks to China’s firm stance to its continued support to the IGAD-led mediation process and to the early conclusion of the conflict in South Sudan.
