Bilateral Meetings Held On the Sidelines of Regional Meeting On South Sudan in Khartoum

Foreign Minister Dr Tedros Adhanom met on Monday with his counterparts, Ali Karti of Sudan, Wang Yi of China, , and Barnaba Benjamin of South Sudan in Khartoum, capital of Sudan. The Foreign Minister also met with IGAD Special Envoys, including Ambassador Seyoum Mesfin of Ethiopia, General Sumbeiywo of Kenya and Mohammed El Daby of Sudan. The meetings centered on consultations over the South Sudan’s peace negotiations.

Dr Tedros said Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that China would commit 1.2 million USD to support the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism in South Sudan. Foreign Minister Wang noted that his visit aimed at supporting the efforts for the achievement of peace and stability in South Sudan with the view to better serve the interests of South Sudanese and advance the common interests of Sudan, the region, china and the international community. After a meeting with Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Ali Karti, Wang Yi told journalists that his country is ready to work with countries of the region as a staunch supporter of the ongoing mediation efforts for an immediate return of peace and stability in South Sudan. He also affirmed that China stands firm to help Sudan overcome economic difficulties and maintain regional peace and stability.

Foreign Minister Wang noted that China is appreciative of Sudan’s National Dialogue initiated by President Omar al-Bashir, adding that China wishes a smooth conclusion of the April national election. He also underlined that his country is committed to maintain its historic cooperation with Sudan in the fields of oil and infrastructure, emphasizing that China is ready to engage in new areas of collaboration, including agriculture, processing and manufacturing.

Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali Karti on his part expressed his thanks and appreciation for the sustained support and help accorded to Sudan in difficulties times by China. Foreign Minister Ali Karti expressed Sudan’s readiness to expand areas of a mutually cooperative partnership, emphasizing that Sudan attaches special importance to the protection of the safety and security of Chinese citizens and entities in Sudan. The Foreign Minister pledged that Sudan stood ready to work in concert with China in advancing regional peace and security and elevate the bilateral relations of the two countries to a new level.
