5.9 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Washington D.C. (VIDEO)

One of the strongest ever recorded earthquake in the east coast shakes Washington D.C. and the Metro area this afternoon at 1:51 pm.  Until this news posted no death is reported but some people injured. According to the U.S. Geological Survey  the quake  initially recorded the quake at 5.8 magnitude but later upgraded it to a 5.9.

The Pentagon and White House were evacuated after the quake, which witnesses in south Central Virginia reported as lasting about 25-30 seconds.

At Reagan National Airport outside Washington, ceiling tiles fell during a few seconds of shaking.

The National Park Service says all memorials and monuments on the National Mall have been evacuated and are closed.

Air traffic control towers in Newark, NJ and JFK were also evacuated, but have since returned to normal operations.

Federal officials say two nuclear reactors at the North Anna Power Station in Louisa County, Va., were automatically taken off line by safety systems around the time of the earthquake.

According to MSNBC, a water pipe in the Pentagon burst and caused significant flooding.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep, in Mineral, Va., in Louisa County.

Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill, N.C., New York City and Philadelphia.

The National Weather Service’s West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the location of the quake was far enough inland that it didn’t threaten to trigger a tsunami on the coast.washington.dc.earthquake

The Wall Street Journal reports the 5.9 magnitude earthquake is the equivalent energy of 10,676 tons of TNT.
